I guess I should start off to say that the menu here, is massive. But after scanning this menu for what seemed like 10 minutes and extensively looking at my options, I chose the burrito mexicano. This burrito was pretty massive, but it wasn't really memorable. I mean it was just all over the place, just stuffed and stacked with everything on top of it. And to be honest, to me simplicity can go a long way. The service was good and there was nothing else so special as far as food goes.
Lastly, but one of the unique things about this place is that they do have an extensive amount of homemade popsicles with some crazy flavors. They are all worth taking a look at before you leave. I believe we got one that was a little bit crazy flavors, and it turns out we didn't like that much. -

This is my go to Mexican restaurant and have been a regular for about 18 months now.
First, the service is friendly and efficient. Today was probably my 7th or so visit and that is one thing that is consistent. My party of 5 went around 3:00 today (Sunday) and it was packed, every table filled. This is apparently a regular family place of celebration as there were large groups and I was happy to see that. This did slow the service down a bit but none of us went hungry or thirsty. I probably won't go again at this time though.
Each of us had something different and only two of us had been here before. All very happy with the food I will add, hot and delicious. Reading where others complain that it's bland, I understand that but to me that's one reason for the salsa bar you can go from mild to 5 alarm fire hot and use the salsas to jazz up your entree if you wish. I prefer a tiny bit of fire so it's perfect for me.
Our server was kind enough to bring a sample of horchata when requested as several had never tried it. We all left with two scoops of their fabulous ice cream too. My pistachio was really good. My son loves the queso ice cream. Yes, queso, and it's quite delicious. Also strawberry very fruity and delicious and a curdled milk cinnamon which tasted much like horchata ice cream. All wonderful.
I tend to avoid the chain restaurants and enjoy supporting the local places and this one is a great one. If you aren't really up to a Mexican meal, stop by for some ice cream, you won't be disappointed. -

I nearly never give a 5 star review, so this 4 star is what most of you would give 5 stars. Everyone has room for improvement and, while I can't give you an example of where Potrillos falls short, I'm sure something could be better.
Mexican is a weekly meal for our family. While I've only lived in Knoxville for 6 months, my significant other has lived here for years. We've tried many other Mexican restaurants and frequent two. This place will replace those two moving forward. This will be our spot.
I generally order pollo loco (chicken, rice and queso) and occasionally order a chicken chimichanga. It's hard to mess-up pollo loco, but few can make what I consider a good chicken chimichanga.(If there's more peppers and onions than chicken, you're doing it wrong. If it's soft and no crunch on the ends, you're doing it wrong). To be fair, though, a decent Mexican place can screw-up a Chicken chimichanga. For this reason, I don't typically order one at a new (to me) Mexican restaurant. It's not a fair assessment of their abilities.
My better half and her son always share chicken fajitas. I'm told Potrillos did not disappoint. She said it was the best she's had in the area. I ordered pollo loco. My only complaint is that it came out as a full chicken breast (not small pieces of chicken mixed into the rice and queso). To be fair, other places do it both ways. It was a VERY large portion of food and I could have shared it with another adult. When presented with an option of flour or corn tortillas, I chose corn. (Does anyone choose flour when given the option?)
The owner, manage or head cook (one in the same?) came out to speak to us and ask how everything was. We told him how good it was and he was quick to let us know they make their tortillas fresh each morning. (You could tell they were fresh). I don't like salsa, but I'm told what they brought to the table was quite good. As others have mentioned, there was also a salsa bar.
Other reviews speak of the food being bland. I'm guessing any number of items on Mexican menu could be bland to the right patron. Before writing this place off, I would encourage them to try another dish or two. No one at our table thought the food was bland. Another reviewer complained that all Mexican tastes the same. I would suggest he/she quit eating Mexican food. To get something tremendously different, you're going to have to visit a much larger city (Atlanta or Nashville in this region).
As others mentioned, they do have fresh (made on site) ice cream. We didn't have room in our bellies for dessert tonight. -

Based my fellow Yelp reviewers I had to try this restaurant. Honestly, I've been a little disappointed in the Mexican food in the Knoxville area.
The restaurant is in a strip mall. The front door looks like the entrance to an Ice Cream shop (no kidding) but it's the entrance to the restaurant.
I walked in for lunch and was seated immediately. I, instantly, liked the guy running the register (not sure of a title for him). He was very nice. Anyway, as soon as I sit down the waitress was there with a menu, drink order, chips & salsa. I had read the salsa was really good so I couldn't wait. I love good salsa.
I ordered the fajita salad, combination steak and chicken. It was comes with green peppers and onions - which I don't like and they didn't have a problem removing them.
Salsa- the salsa they placed on the table was good but watery. I was disappointed. If this salsa was thicker it would be a very option for the Chip and Salsa person. They also have a Salsa bar but it's not laid out well. They have the names of the salsa written on a piece of paper but the positions don't correlate. Anyway, I picked some and tried it. And I immediately picked the wrong one -- it was hot so I only tried it twice. I like to think I can handle the hot stuff but I can't. The flavor was good but I don't know what it was. You'll just have to try your luck.
The fajita salad - the bowl was much larger than other Mexicans restaurants I've been to so the rumor of large portions is a fact. There was plenty of food for one person. As for the taste, I was hoping for a little more flavor. The steak and chicken was on the bland side at least to me. However, it was still decent and was enough for me to go back.
Overall, the service was great, the people were very nice and the food was good enough for me to recommend and to come back.
I gave it 4 stars because the friendly environment but the food was more of a 3 star.
